What do we need to know about The Beaumont?
This lovely luxury hotel has been closed since the first lockdown, taking a year and a half to lavish some love and attention on its restaurant and bar areas. It reopened this summer with a brand new bar, an afternoon tea lounge, a new terrace and a new-look restaurant. It's the perfect timing to go and check-in for an overnight stay.
Where exactly is it?
You'll find it just off Oxford Street by Brown Hart Gardens - that strange elevated park that's about a two-minute walk from Selfridges. The building looks like part of a set from an Agatha Christie movie but, while it dates from 1932, it's only been a hotel since 2014. It once used to be London's most glamorous car park and petrol station.
To get here by tube, head to Bond Street station which is just around the corner.
We went big for our one night staycation, plumping for the Schiaparelli Suite (Room 401) which turned out to be significantly bigger than most London flats.
The separate lounge had its own dining area and piano and would be the perfect spot to invite a few friends around to gawp at your good fortune for the night.
Down in what used to be the hotel's private Cub room for residents, they've created the Magritte Bar. Bar Manager Antonino Lo Iacono (ex-Rules, Dukes, and Mark’s Club in Mayfair) has put together a cocktail list inspired by 1920s New York.
If you aren't heading in for dinner, you can put the bar food menu through its paces. With oysters, caviar and corndog options, it should have something to please pretty much everyone.
Dinner at The Colony Grill Room
Regulars to this New York-style grill restaurant will notice a few changes to how the room looks. There's a new wine station, which is always good news, but the biggest change is the look of the room.
There's also a new chef in charge of the kitchens here. Ben Boeynaems has previously worked at Petrus, The Goring and most recently The Zetter Group. So there are new dishes on the menu, as well as all the old classics.
Here's a taste of that new menu:
Room for dessert?
Desserts are what The Colony Grill Room does VERY well.
The next day
You could always breakfast in Gatsby's Room, which used to be where the bar was (look out for the secret door in the bookcase). But if you're feeling lazy - and particularly if you have one of the hotel's larger studios or suites - you can always opt for room service...
We really missed The Beaumont during its extended closure so we couldn't be happier to see it open once more. Regulars shouldn't worry about the gentle changes to the hotel's layout and design; they've been very careful to enhance rather than alter it too much.
The addition of the Magritte Bar, in particular, is a genius idea and makes it instantly one of London's best hotel bars. Come for dinner, stay for breakfast and let this hotel's Art Deco meets 21st century London charm work its magic on you.
