9/6/21 - Updated with images, booking details and opening date
Fishmonger/wine bar/seafood restaurant The Sea, The Sea has been a big hit since it landed in Chelsea on Pavillion Road. That's particularly down to the food by Leo Carreira (the chef previously behind Londrino) which Marina O'Loughlin described as "genuinely exciting". So it's good news that they're opening up a second space - this time over in East London, in Haggerston. They've taken over the space that was once gaming cafe Draughts.
Now we have more information on what to expect, plus a first look at their new place. And it's quite a look - think Bond villain meets Hackney hipster. The restaurant focuses around the 12 seat chef's table which you arrive at by passing along a corridor lined with tanks with live shellfish in them.
On the menu (which will be £110 for an omakase-style tasting menu) you'll find dishes like:
- Dry aged turbot, hot dog pods, honeycomb tomatoes
- Horse mackerel, pine nut, sake, shallots
- Langoustine ‘Wedding Cake’ - a seaweed ‘egg cake’, seasoned with togarashi and stuffed with smoked langoustines, glazed in homemade almond milk and topped with langoustine ‘floss’
they're even promising to have certain big name DJs performing at the restaurant from behind the counter. All in all, it marks an interesting time for this Haggerston street which is also about to see wine drinkers clubhouse Planque open there.
