One of the Test Drives we did in the run-up to The Lockdown, was the rather wonderful Wild Tavern in Chelsea, from the same people behind Goodman and Burger & Lobster. Like many other restaurants, they've been closed since lockdown began but now they've emerged once more, kicking off a takeaway service for local Chelsea residents.
Their new takeaway menu is mainly about allowing you to recreate the Wild Tavern experience at home, and the star of the show is access to the USDA meat that Wild Tavern and its fellow Goodman restaurants specialise in. There are cuts like USDA Prime Rib Eye on/off the bone (35/40 per kg), USDA Chateaubriand, USDA Prime Fillet and a Rack of lamb (all £40 per kg). So if you're looking for that extra special steak night in, this definitely looks like the place to come.
They're also serving their fresh pasta for cooking at home. Just choose your pasta and add sauces including Cacio & Pepe, Datterini tomato and basil, Courgette, basil and mussel, Saffron fish ragout, Venison ragout and Cornish Crab bisque.
But if you really want to go all out on pasta, the star dish to order is their special lobster pasta for two (with 600-700g lobster, £45). That lobster is also ready to take away steamed (£35 per kg) or fresh (£40 per kg). We have also heard that burgers may be coming to the menu at some point.
For drink, there's wine from their cellar (they do have an impressive list) and ready-made 500ml cocktails (including gin/vodka martini, negroni and old fashioned),
And, to finish off the experience, slices of their quite wonderful Napoloean cake - see below - are available to take away.
So yes - the menu does really seem to cover pretty much every aspect of a meal at Wild Tavern. Yes, you are going to have to cook that steak for yourselves - but we're going to assume you're up to speed on that by this point (ask them for tips, if not).
